Game Review: The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing

To often do we get games that don’t deliver based on their instant recognizable characters. In other words, a terrible game is often released because it has a name character attached. By the logic, I was weary of The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing, the latest game from NeocoreGames, for that very reason, but boy was I wrong.

If you have ever owned a Gamecube, you may remember the White Wolf game Hunter: The Reckoning. It had a similar Gauntlet style feel and concerned a hunter taking out the supernatural. This is a fun game with continuous action and a nice steampunk vibe that doesn’t destroy the setting. Lets talk monsters and combat since these are the two things most players will be looking at.

You may assume that it being Van Helsing that you’d only be facing variations on the vampire theme but the monsters are varied and include demonic entities, werewolves, and ghosts. Though the weapons are standard, the way you attack is unique and keeps you involved. You line up your attacks in order than unleash them all at once. Different combinations make sure that you stay involved in the combat. I made sure that I tried different combos to get the most out of my attacks.

Another added plus is your companion. Van Helsing has a beautiful female ghost that follows him around named Lady Katarina. Let me be clear, she is beautiful but that is not all, she is deadly. She has her own equipment and can  buy inventory and level up. She is the perfect companion for destroying monsters in this world.

This game is a simple throwback to simpler times but delivers on so many levels. Though at first glance it seems like a simple button smash, it has so much more. The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is available now and well worth the price. If you are looking for some fun and spooky goodness, this is the way to go!
