Review: LISA FRANKENSTEIN BLURAY

When it comes to Frankenstein stories, there has been no shortage since the 1930s, when Universal first unleashed the monster upon the film world. We have had so many variations on the themes that the thought alone is a bit stale. But then came LISA FRANKEBSTEIN! I want to get this out there right away. What a fun movie! Lisa Frankenstein is a bit of a through back to the days of the weird late 80’s/early 90’s teen comedy. You know what I’m talking about. My Boyfriend’s back, My Best Friend Is A Vampire and Teen Witch to name a few. Just good fun. LISA FRANKENSTEIN offers the same, but with the biting wit of writer Diablo Cody.

The year is appropriately, 1989. Lisa Swallows (Kathryn Newton) Yep…she should be vary popular, but isn’t, is a weird teen at her local high school. She has no friends except for her step sister Taffy ( and yes, she is wacky) and a bust at the cemetery that she talks to. Pretty sad. That is until “The Creature” (Cole Sprouse) rises from the grave. He asks for Lisa’s help in replacing his rotting body parts and she does since she has no real friends. Her sister Taffy is fun but has no business playing Carla Gugino’s daughter and she is reminiscent of Wednesday’s Enid. But whatever.

The movie is short on plot. Basically Lisa needs to murder to replace the Creature’s rotting body parts. Fun situations ensue. It’s strengths lie in the performances and nostalgia and the sheer sweetness of the story. It is a sleepover movie for the weird girl and though that line has been blurred in the past decade plus, it is still pure in certain places.

Kathryn Newton is certainly likable as Lisa and I would love to see her return as this character again. Kathryn Newton is certainly likable as Lisa and I would love to see her return as this character again. Same for Cole Sprouse is has a certain Johnny Deppness to his look as the creature.

So the movie is a fun time, what about the bluray?

The film has the typical 1.85:1 aspect ratio and looks great on a large 85″. Th lighting screams Halloween feature and it fills the room nicely.

Amongst the extras, we get deleted scenes and a fun gag reel along with the extras:

, “An Electric Connection”

“Resurrecting The 80’s”

“A Dark Comedy Duo”,

and a good Commentary by good Zelda Williams.

This is definitely a disc worth owning and you should be out there picking it up Tuesday!
