I haven’t sat down and watched Stanley Kubrick’s “ The Shining ” in a number of years. Recently, something reminded me of this movie and a few days ago I sat aside two and a half hours and poured myself into this classic piece of horror cinema and I gotta’ tell ya’, this movie is even better than I remembered.

the-shining-1980-720p-hddvd-x264-sinners00889518-23-01“ The Shining ” is based on the novel of the same title written by the beautifully twisted but genius mind of horror legend, Stephen King. Although Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of the original novel is quite different than the book itself, I wouldn’t change a thing. For a more accurate version of Stephen King’s masterpiece, you can always check out the made for TV mini-series made in 1997. However, if you want to see a true icon of a horror film, Mr. Kubrick’s work is the one for you. Stanley Kubrick has made several great movies in his illustrious career (Spartacus, Full Metal Jacket, A Clockwork Orange), but I sincerely believe that this was his finest moment. As far as Stephen King book adaptations go, “The Shining” is easily at the top of a very, very long list (only rivaled by “The Shawshank Redemption” in my humble opinion).

23163_2This is the story of a recovering alcoholic taking a job as an offseason caretaker of the isolated Overlook Hotel in the mountains of Colorado. Once the Hotel closes for the winter, the entire staff goes home and Mr. Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), and his wife Wendy (Shelly Duvall) move in with their son Danny (Danny Lloyd) where they will be all alone (or are they) to care for the hotel until the weather breaks and the new season begins. Not too long after their stay begins, Jack starts to crack under the pressure of cabin fever and begins to lose his sanity as a result of the horrific passed happenings that have taken place in the Overlook.

68719951386RCqVoBDHcIt truly shocks me that Jack Nicholson did not win an academy award for his staring role as Jack Torrance; at the very least get nominated. I looked into this a bit and read that this movie was considered one of the greatest academy award “snubs” of all time and I could not agree more. I watch this movie and don’t know that I’ve ever seen a more convincing crazy as hell madman. Nicholson is just plain old outstanding in this movie. Everyone in this limited cast did a pretty damn good job, but Jack was incredible.

shining-1980-overlook-hotel-blizzard-00n-p5k (1)I know that there are probably very few of you out there that have not had the pleasure of seeing “The Shining”, but if you are one of the unfortunate few, do yourself a huge favor and check it out; you will not regret it. If you have seen it but it’s been a while, revisit this classic and you could very well get an all new appreciation of exactly how great this movie is; I did.

Keep It Scary!!!
