German underground horror is a subgenre of the horror film, which has achieved cult popularity since first appearing in the mid-1980s.
In an attempt to shed its violent image, horror films were very rarely made in Germany after the fall of the Third Reich. Movies such as Ein Toter hing im Netz/Horrors of Spider Island, Schlangengrube und das Pendel, and The Head were filmed and released in the decades following World War II, but to very little success.
2018 presents a gem of German horror cinema, Violence and sex join together on German Angst, directed by three underground filmakers, Jörg Buttgereit (Nekromantik(1987); Andreas Marschall (Tears of Kali (2004); and Michal Kosakowski (Zero Killed (2014).
The film tells three different stories, the first one is called “Final Girl” and was directed by Jorg Buttgereit. We see a young lady obsessed with Guinea pigs, and who has great surgical knowledge. She will show her talents by putting in gear her twisted mind. She has locked up a man and only will let him leave the house in pieces… starting by cutting his member, NO ANESTHESIA! Sounds painful, but I rather to think that he deserved it.
The second story is accurately named “Make a wish” and was directed by Michael Kasakowski. It starts when a deaf couple are seeking a little privacy inside an abandoned building when suddenly they are savagely attacked by a group of Hooligans, simply for being polish. Violence and racism merge together to create this short film, and only a magic talisman can save them from the inevitable rape and murder they are about to suffer. With well created flashbacks that lead us to the Second world war era, where the Nazi soldiers were full of hate towards Polish, the film will keep you on the edge of your sit and holding your breath.
Last but not least, “Alraune” by Andreas Marschall. It tells the story of a famous photographer who starts chatting online, struggling to find acceptance, he gets inside the wrong party. Perversion, sexual desire, and strange drugs can be a dangerous combo. His mind will twist until he won´t be able to discern hallucination from reality.
All of the stories were created to call the viewer´s attention, to impress and they all have an interesting background that you on your own will have to discover.
This exceptional anthology is out now on VOD, DVD and BLURAY. If you want to step out of Hollywood creations and go a little bit deeper on horror cinema I recommend you this film, that has nothing to envy to other horror cult movies.
