Review: Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024)

Sometimes when you bring back a franchise you pay a lot of fan service to get people in the mood. It is always appreciated. But every now and again you wait for the legacy sequel and to me this hits even harder in the best ways. Such is the case with Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire.

The film kicks off with the new Ghostbusters team lead by Gary (Paul Rudd) and Callie (Carrie Coon) along with Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (McKenna). This pursuit causes some major destruction which lands the team in hot water with Walter Peck (William Atherton) from the original film, who is now the Mayor. Such a great reveal! This gets the very underage Phoebe benched from participating due to not just her age but the danger.

Meanwhile, Trevor and Lucky (Celeste O’Connor) are working with Ray (Dan Aykroyd) on his new paranormal show and investigations. The plot kicks off when a man named Nadeem (Kumail Nanjiani), brings in a box of his dead grandma’s spooky heirlooms to sell to Ray…cheaply. Well one of them is filled with paranormal energy and it wants out!

What follows is a fun new adventure with Peter (Bill Murry) and Winston (Ernie Hudson) back as well. They visit some familiar old places like the library complete with the original ghost still there!

It is a lot of fun that brings in new characters and operates as both a sequel to Ghostbusters Afterlife and a thrilling Ghostbusters OG adventure as well.

Janine is back working for Winston now and there is a nice visual reference to Egon from the cartoon. One of Winstons team is Lars (James Acaster) who is blonde, tall with glasses. When he dons a Ghostbusters uniform in the finale, he looks like Egon in the cartoons. Don’t know if it was intentional or a happy accident, but it is awesome!!!!!

I would argue that this film is a better overall film than Afterlife, though Afterlife did tug on the emotional heart strings.

This film is a non stop blast and belongs in your collection ASAP. Ghostbuster: Frozen Empire drops tomorrow. June 25th!
