For a very long time, the film Victor Crowley was kept a secret until a tenth-anniversary screening of the cult classic Hatchet, revealed to the horror community Victor Crowley (Hatchet 4) was the film screening. With the age of the internet along with social media, many pondered as to how the secret was kept for so very long and refreshing to most – Victor Crowley, the fourth film in the series would NOT be a reboot.

Before I proceed I must admit, I am a tad bit “late to the party” with the Hatchet series. I saw the first installment when it came out. However, the two sequels are blurs, I couldn’t tell you if I have seen them all the way through, so, to say the least, I was a bit nervous traveling into the Hatchet universe so late in the game, but immediately my nervousness faded into excitement and thankfulness.

The film started off in 1964 with a retelling of the Crowley myth, this was a marvelous idea, bringing everyone up to speed (for people like me, ha)! Shortly after this sequence, we shift to the present day where survivor Andrew (Parry Shen) has written a book about the traumatizing experience he endured ten years prior. Andrew is on his book tour with his hilarious, no filter, bossy, pill-popping publicist, Kathleen played by none other than the beautiful Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp). It appears that Andrew is attempting to cash in on the entire ordeal, for the anniversary, especially with Kathleen’s abrupt influence. For the past decade, many have dubbed Andrew as the murder and still refer to him as such, even though he was cleared of all charges. Meanwhile, a group of filmmakers is hoping to convince Andrew to read their script and appear in their film, explaining the events that occurred that grizzly night in the swamp. An audacious Andrew is convinced and ventures out to the gruesome muddy swampland once again and soon realizes he has made a mistake, and this time it could cost him his life.

A strong point the film carries is two different sets of leading characters existing leading to a high body count which allows Mr. Crowley – more victims to toy with! Among the other cast members are Tiffany Sheppis, Laura Ortiz, Katie Booth, Dave Sheridan and of course Kane Hodder returns to reprise his role as Victor Crowley.

Director Adam Green did not hold back! We receive our first two kills in the first 3-5 minutes, fantastic! This film is not for the squeamish and delivers exceptional gore and some unique deaths that I have never witnessed. Kane Hodder’s portrayal of Crowley cannot be ignored, he appears to be more significant, more robust, and more burly than ever, and let’s not forget very disgustingly deformed.

This fourth installment has created a fondness for the franchise, and I will be going back and re-visiting the other films. Victor Crowley, filled with filthy comedy, a fun story and all sorts of gore – comes with the highest of recommendations.
