Review: Stay In And Watch GET OUT

Sometimes you’re wanted a little too much.

“Get Out” is a mixture of “Stanford Wife’s” meets The Twilight Zone episode. Writer and Director Jordan Peele better know from his comedy show “Key and Peele” completely steps out of his comfortable comedy zone to bring us this unpredictable thrill ride of horror. Pushing the boundaries of racism and slavery in the modern world.

British actor Daniel Kaluuya best known for his appearance in the film “Sicario” and American/Comedian actress Allison Williams known for her role as Marnie Michaels on the HBO comedy-drama series Girls, give an outstanding performance in this film. Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya) is a black male who is dating Rose Armitage (Allison Williams) a white female. In the beginning of the movie Rose plans to take Chris to meet her parents but he is a little hesitant about the whole trip, he asks Rose if her parent know he’s Black? A few scenes after that we have the white cop vs. black male cliché encounter. At this point I’m thinking, OK, so this movie is trying to make a statement about a black male dating a white woman and how hard it is to deal with everyday life experiences. At one point, it seems like maybe Chris is just overreacting to everyday racial tension. This American Horror film is a slow burn of a film for its first half as Peele piles up the clues that something more sinister is going on.

One of the scenes that stand out the most for is the Family party. Everyone shows up to this party and they admire Chris. Now let me point out that everyone is Caucasian. Chris feels a little uncomfortable and wonders why everyone is watching his every move and why are they all asking weird questions. Chris notices from a distance another black male and approaches him feeling comfortable, telling him how relief he is that there’s another black person at the party. But the interaction between them leaves him wondering even more. This man is almost robot like, no human emotions, doesn’t seem to have any feelings, almost like being brainwashed. This film is a hell of a mind fuck! Don’t let appearances fool you. Can’t wait to see what else Jordan Peele has up his dark sleeves.
