Making her directorial debut, Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczynska brings us The Lure. The film centers around man-eating mermaids and provides a musical-thriller twist that brings everything together. The story is set in the 1980s and focuses on two mermaid sisters played by Michalina Olszańska and Marta Mazurek who are recruited to join a band in a Warsaw dance club. One of the mermaids “Golden” falls in love and begins to develop an appetite for humans and the sister’s relationship is put to the ultimate test.
On February 1, The Lure is scheduled to open at New York’s IFC Center.
The horror community hasn’t faced exposure to many mermaid horror films, the latest one I can remember is Killer Mermaid back in 2014. So news of The Lure put a smile on my face, even though it has a musical twist to it, the idea of sexy mermaids with an appetite for human flesh is perfect in my book.
