Bluray Review: Ash vs. Evil Dead S01

Ash vs. Evil Dead is the reward for being a fan of Evil Dead all these years. Though it sounded strange at first, TV is the perfect place to continue Ash’s adventures. The Evil Dead films grew the bulk of their fans from videocassette so most people experienced them at home. So it’s fitting that these new adventures come to us the same way.

Ash (1)We come to Ash 30 years later and living in a trailer, picking up on women at the bar, and working at a local store. He hangs a young guy named Pablo who idolizes him and cleans up his mistakes and Pablo’s friend/secret crush Kelly. Things are what they are until Ash makes a mistake (again). While trying to impress a drunk woman in his trailer, he accidentally(?) reads from the Necronomicon and summons the deadites once more. Now that his life is in chaos, he sets out to fix his mistakes with Pablo and Kelly in tow. While tracking down the dark forces, he realizes that demons from his past are beginning to surface and they are drawing him back to where it all began. That damn cabin.

This series is great and has everything you’ve been hoping for. All the tropes are here so you can count on wild fights, creepy settings, and dismembered hands that live. This series is just what the Doctor ordered!

Ash (2)I know what you want to know about though, the extras. Well like any STARZ series, you get a look at the series in the form of an episode by episode recap/inside look. There are also two other featurettes filled with Ash goodness.

How to kill a deadite: is a short but fun featurette on killing deadites and a look at the weaponry.

The best of Ash: A look at Ash’s best moments from season one.

The best extra is of course the commentary tracks. Episode one is the best simply because it features Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell. It immediately takes you back to the Evil Dead days. Here is the breakdown…
